On the Walls of the Lower East Side is compiled of 666 photos taken by artist Sol LeWitt. Known for his deadpan photographic documentation, the artist often explored uniformity and social documentation. On the Walls of the Lower East side is a colorful observation of the walls of his lower Manhattan neighborhood, at a time when the area was draped in grafitti, tattered posters, and splattered paint. This piece, made in 1979, is now on view for the first time in New York in an installation wall at the Mondrian Soho. The installment was organized through a collaboration with Morgans Hotel Group, Paula Cooper Gallery, the LeWitt Foundation, and curator Adam Shopkorn. Those involved wanted to
show the artwork in a permanent outdoor setting so as to expose guests and passersby to a piece that deals with the history of the city. The wall holds 120 of the photographs taken by LeWitt, printed on vinyl and grouped in a grid on a 20 foot by 60 foot wall
