HEEA Development LLC is pleased to announce the completion of architect Shigeru Ban’s Metal Shutter Houses. The luxury condominium building in Chelsea at 524 West 18th Street is Ban’s first residential project in New York City.

Two distinct features gave the building its name—the shutters that cover the two major facades of the building and the condos that feel like individual homes. Inspired by the after-hours metal shutters of the surrounding Chelsea galleries, Ban created motorized perforated metal shutters and designed dramatic bi-fold doors creating a new urban indoor/outdoor living experience.

The eleven-story project features eight duplex houses ranging from 1,950 sq. ft. to 4,644 sq. ft., an art gallery, and a 24-hour doorman service in the lobby. The recently finished penthouse has been brought to market for $12.95 million, while many other units were sold prior to breaking ground.

Shigeru Ban, known for his “poetic” architectural style and open concept homes, was a recent recipient of the National Interior Design Award. Signature Ban features include interior sliding glass doors to separate rooms and the balcony, curved countertops in the bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling white lacquer with matte finish cabinetry, custom designed hardware throughout each home, and cantilevering islands in the kitchen.
