The Standard Hotel and Creative Time celebrated the launch of its second installation of StandART, a series of in-room videos for the hotel. The event was held in the Boom Boom Room, a bar and lounge located at the top of the Standard that provides almost 180 degrees of breathtaking views of the Hudson River.
This edition of StandART features works from Terence Koh (Rabbit Holy Days), Kalup Linzy (Labisha’s Bonus Track and Sit Down Child), Allison Schulnik (Forest), Andrew Cross (Prelude from The Solo), Naomi Fisher (Myakka), Estefanía Peñafiel Loaiza (Sans Titre Paysaye), and Slater Bradley (The Abandonments). The subject matter ranges from music and dance to social commentary. Rabbit Holy Days, a piece commissioned by the Standard and filmed in the hotel, tells the story of bunnies falling in love.
Says Director of Communications of the Standard Lucy McIntyre about the concept, “[The Standard] wanted to bring something to the rooms, and [the videos] provide a nice public platform for the artists as well.” When asked if there has been a positive response to the videos, she says, “Guests always comment on it,” which is not a surprise considering the videos are quirky, unique, and extremely entertaining.
The fusion of video art and hotels started by Creative Time and the Standard is an idea that other hotels and businesses will no doubt look to for the future and in fact, have already begun investigating. Says Anne Pasternak, President and Art Director of CreativeTime, “[Other hotels] have asked me to break up with the Standard, but I’m a loyal girl.”
The video series will be shown on all televisions at the Standard in New York, Miami, Downtown LA and Hollywood. The Standard and Creative Time are indeed on the cutting edge, as the videos provide moving and living art created by young and talented artists, creating a visually stimulating aesthetic that is truly one of a kind.
