The Surrey Hotel hosted a 1920’s inspired rooftop garden party on the evening of June 15. The party was in celebration of the seasonal opening of the hotel’s private rooftop garden. The soiree paid homage to the era in which the hotel was born. Waitresses, accordingly, wore headpieces with feathers and flapper dresses with long tassels.
Located on the Upper East Side, the 2009 reopening of The Surrey revealed an interior that showcases limestone walls and moldings, coffered ceilings, rustic mirrors, marble archways and floors in the lobby. The hotel has its own intimate collection of contemporary art including two photographs from American conceptual artist Jenny Holzer—You Are My Own and But The Myth Of Love. Guests were greeted on the main floor of the hotel by a tapestry from artist Chuck Close featuring model, designer, musician and fashion icon Kate Moss.
Perched on the 17th floor of The Surrey, across from the Penthouse Suite, the garden party provided a clear view of the Upper East Side and Central Park. The garden had a “hidden” aesthetic with boxwoods, pots of herbs and ivy covering iron tables and chairs.
A menu from Daniel Boulud’s Café Boulud, the classic French restaurant located on the main floor of the hotel, was enjoyed by guests alike and included tuna tartar and a beet salad with walnuts and blue cheese.
The Surrey is the original home of Daniel Boulud’s first New York City restaurant, Daniel. Along with Café Boulud, Boulud now presents his latest venture, Bar Pleiades, is located on the lobby-level of The Surrey.
The rooftop garden was the perfect setting for a relaxing evening of red lipstick, roaring twenties fashion, and an unbeatable view of the summer sunset from the garden.
