Venice—June 2nd, 2011. At this year’s 54th Venice Biennale, Marina Abramovic and Minister of Culture of Montenegro Branislav Micunovic, hosted a breakfast at the Montenegro Pavilion announcing plans to develop the Marina Abramovic Community Center Obod Cetinje (MACCOC). Abramovic, a New York-based Serbian performance artist, is developing the Community Center Obod Cetinje in her home country of Montenegro. “Montenegro is celebrating five years of independence and in our multicultural context, the creation of the Marina Abramovic Community Center Obod Cetinje represents an extraordinary contribution to positioning Montenegro on the international cultural scene,” said Micunovic.
The MACCOC will be housed in the Obod Factory Complex that historically produced refrigerators, presenting over 140,000 square meters of space within the factory that borders the city of Cetiinje.
The MACCOC will be an international cultural center dedicated to the promotion of dance, theater, opera, music, film, and performance. “I want Cetinje to become a modern art center,” said Marina Abramovic. Guests including Klaus Biesenbach, Fiona Scarry, Rosalie Goldberg, Rem Koolhaas, and Nicholas Logsdail enjoyed the brunch announcement.
