The Whitney Museum of American Art launched their Groundbreaking week on May 19 with the 2011 American Art Award Gala. This year’s award honored Marissa Mayer, the VP of Product Management at Google. Google and the Whitney’s Education Department have partnered to present Doodle 4 Google, a nationwide contest for K-12 students to redesign Google’s iconic home-page. The winner receives money toward a college scholarship and a technology grant for his school.
This event is not only marks 20th anniversary of the gala, but also celebrates the May 24th groundbreaking of the Whitney’s new facility in Manhattan’s meatpacking district. This new building, designed by Renzo Piana, continues the museum’s 80-year legacy of American art. The gala is the first in a series of events, public art installations, and performances to raise awareness about the Whitney’s exciting new venture.
The gala, which included a performance by Debbie Harry, Chris Stein, and Matt Katzoben, raised $2 million which will be directed toward the museum’s operating funds, exhibitions, and education programs.
