The Pace Gallery once again welcomes Richard Tuttle’s latest solo show. “What’s the Wind” is the most recent work from this renowned sculptor.
“What’s the Wind” is one of almost three hundred solo shows mounted since 1965 and is his second at the Pace Gallery. Over the course of his prolific career, Tuttle’s work has become an important part of collections from the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles to Moderna Museet, Stockholm. This show is particularly self-referential and draws on techniques and themes that he has explored throughout a career that has lasted five decades.
Consisting of six free-standing, large-scale piece (most over seven-feet tall and seven-feet wide), these pieces are more than simple sculptures, but spatial interpretations. They consist of frames, within which are assemblages built of a variety of materials from a range of woods to styrofoam, wire, saran wrap and scotch tape. As opposed to creating concrete forms, the transparency of these pieces invite the viewer to examine the intricate interplay of each assemblage and the ways in which the contextual interpretation of each component shifts depending upon the angle at which it is viewed.
