As part of Lille 3000, the Saatchi Gallery will be presenting “The Silk Road,” an ambitious exhibit showcasing over 60 paintings, sculptures, photographs, and installations from the Saatchi’s collection. This will be the first time the London gallery has ever exhibited artwork in France, but that is only part of what makes “The Silk Road” significant. All of the exhibit’s works are by artists from China, India, Iran, Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, hence the show’s title. “The Silk Road” references the trade routes that were used for centuries to connect Europe to the Middle East and Asia through India, and today, as regions grounded in tradition while embracing modernity, the art created in these dynamic societies is influencing the art world more and more. “The Silk Road” is a tribute to the power of Asian and the Middle Eastern contemporary art as well as to the Saatchi Gallery’s reputation for displaying unseen artists, often with extremely favorable results. Opening at the Tri Postal on October 20, 2010 and closing on January 16, 2011, “The Silk Road” is not to be missed.
