Pace Beijing will open a new group exhibition this weekend featuring over 30 of China’s most dynamic artists. Each work in “Great Performances,” whether video, installation, painting, or photography, is presented in the context of performance. Because the earliest pieces are from the 1990s, the exhibit reflects more recent developments in the Chinese contemporary art scene, particularly the “consciousness of performance” that pervades these works and represents the “self-awakening of the Chinese people.” The “consciousness” results in a form of self-expression that is uniquely enthusiastic, intense, and absurd. The show will be on view from August 28 to October 16, and artists include Hai Bo, He An, He Yunchang, Hu Xiangqian, Li Songsong, Lin Yilin, Liu Xiaodong, Ma Liuming, Ma Qiusha, Peng Yu, Qin Ga, Qiu Zhijie, Song Dong, Sun Yuan, Wang Jin, Wang Qingsong, Wu Xiaojun, Xiao Yu, Xu Zhen, Yang Maoyuan, Yang Zhichao, Yuan Shun, Zhang Dali, Zhang Huan, Zhao Bandi, Zhou Tiehai, Zhu Fadong, and Zhu Yu.
