Chanel and its new ambassador Laird Hamilton hosted a truly nautical event this past Saturday at The Crow’s Nest in Montauk, New York. Some big names from Gabby Reece, Ricahrd Gere, Carey Lowell, Rachel Weisz, and Mark Ronson, to Julian Schnabel, Oliver Sarkozy, Bruce Weber, Nan Bush, Anjelica Huston, and Jimmy Buffet were in attendance for fireside cocktails and an oceanic celebration. Honoring the non-profit environmental organization Surfrider and the bestselling author Susan Casey and her new book The Wave, about the oceans and its daring surfers, Chanel set sail on its maritime theme. The event follows the debut of Chanel’s new J12 Marine Watch and the naming of big-wave surfer and environmentalist Hamilton as its ambassador.

Specially designed for professional divers, the J12 Marine Watch is waterproof to over 300 meters, readable in the dark, and has a rubber strap. Hamilton tried it out, and subsequently gave it his approval. “This watch is authentic,” he said. “I have put it through 'the test' and it has survived me.” The J12 Marine Watch design is inspired by the sea, complete with nautical emblems and the technology of an unidirectional revolving bezel, sapphire disc, and self-winding Swiss movement.

As the first diving watch developed by Chanel, the company’s President and Chief Operating Officer John Galantic stated that “Laird's daring spirit and love for the ocean are in perfect harmony with the inspiration behind the J12 Marine watch.”
