On October 22, during the FIAC, at the Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Terence Koh showed the eighth act of “Adansonias,” an imaginary opera. Throughout the weeks building up to the opening, he drew from the city’s architecture, atmosphere, and sensuality to compose the experimental tragic opera and created drawings, collages, and photographs based on the yet unperformed scenes of the unorthodox production. Through his installations, objects, wall pieces, and performances, Koh created a space in which memory and imagination mixed with art history and subculture. He explored mythology, religion, identity, power, fashion, and sexuality.
In his opera, Koh transformed the ground floor of the gallery into an all-white set loosely based on The Little Prince, in which he played the main character alongside eight white-clad performers. For the music, only the white keys of a piano were used (a reference to Anton Reicha, who used innovative methods of composition) immersing the public into the artist’s unique cosmos.
